Good morning math families! This will be my final post for the year.  This week we will be wrapping up our 5A book. There will be a test on Thursday covering area. The students have learned how to find the area of a quadrilateral, a triangle, and a parallelogram (Monday's lesson). Our last day of math will be our last full day of school, one week from Monday. I'd like to have a math game day and a little party, too. I'll send out an email to request some snacks and drinks to be brought in. I have so enjoyed this group of students! Enjoy your summer!

Good morning math families, we have four more weeks of math. Can you believe it? We will spend two weeks finishing up our fractions unit (we are learning how to divide by fractions now). Ask your child if they can explain how dividing can be related to multiplying. Our Unit 4 cumulative test will be after that. Then our final unit is a review of perimeter and area. I've enjoyed teaching such a small group of kids this year. : )

Good afternoon, just a quick note to let you know what we're doing in math. We are half way through our fractions unit, and will have a test covering the first half of the material early next week. But we are also doing some AZ Merit test preparations, making sure that we've covered all the concepts that will be appearing on next week's final portion of that test. All is well!

Welcome back for our final quarter! We are well into our 3rd unit of the 5A text. This week we will learn about multiplication of a fraction by a whole number and then practice with word problems before taking our test on Thursday. The next unit is still working with fractions, so we will have plenty of time working through all of the concepts we learned before the break.

Good morning! Well the students had a difficult time with the math test on Thursday. Most of you know they are making some pretty detailed test corrections. My goal is that they will identify that the majority of their mistakes were due to rushing through the test, not reading carefully, not calculating carefully, etc. Perhaps a couple of students did not understand one or two problems, but the rest of them simply hurried and made careless errors. I will be giving a similar test on Wednesday, allowing them to change their grade if they improve. Tuesday's Lyceum period will be dedicated to reviewing and helping those who did struggle with particular concepts. The rest of the week we will be looking at order of operations again, adding parentheses into the mix.

Good morning, I was reminded this week that I hadn't written a math blog this quarter! So sorry. Since Mrs. Scott took over writing the regular 4th grade blog, I'd forgotten that I still needed to update the math blog. So, let me tell you what's going on in our class. We started 5A and are almost through with the first unit. The students have a study guide that is due on Monday. We'll review Monday and Tuesday, on Wednesday they don't have math b/c of Galileo testing, and then the test will be on Thursday. I gave them a cumulative test before we started the new book and discovered that many of the concepts taught from 4B had already been forgotten. So I will now be including some questions on their 5A tests that review older concepts. We don't ever want them forgetting skills in math, because it should always spiral and go deeper as they progress through the books. The next unit is about order of operations, mental math strategies, and word problems. Have a great weekend!

Greetings! Only two more days of math this year!!! We have finished our 4B book and I'm using these last few days to review the most frequently missed types of problems from our Galileo tests in September. The kids enjoy using the computers and I figured every extra time I can put them in front of them, is good practice. I will use them on Monday and Tuesday this week. Enjoy your long break!

Good morning math families. We only have one more week of math this semester. We will have our unit test tomorrow on data analysis. The students have learned how to find the mode, median, range, and mean of a set of data. They have also learned how to read various graphs. The rest of the week we will work on the final unit of the book, volume. There will not be a test at the end of this unit. We will be ready to begin the 5A book in quarter three.

Good afternoon! We are finishing our quick review of area and perimeter on Monday and will review and practice all day Tuesday. We will have a test on Wednesday and then we'll be all set to start the next unit when they come back on Monday.

Good evening, we just finished Unit 8 on Geometry and will have our final quiz on Monday. The next three units are all really short and are review from concepts covered in 3B. On Tuesday we'll begin Unit 9 - Area and Perimeter. This unit will wrap up before Thanksgiving. Have a super week!

Good morning, I wanted to thank you for sending in some treats for our little impromptu math party on Friday. I decided to have fun with them since we finished up that section of our geometry unit. We're still going to be working on geometry for the remainder of the quarter. This week we begin with quadrilaterals and review area and perimeter. I remember last year it was rough because the kids had forgotten how to multiply double digit numbers. So I anticipate a bit of review in that area before we tackle area with double digit figures. We had excellent results on the test on Thursday, averaging 88%! This is a great group of kids and I am really enjoying them. : )

Good afternoon math families! We began our first geometry unit and the kids are enjoying it. We will spend this week working with protractors learning how to measure angles. Students are welcome to bring in their own protractors if they have them, but it's not necessary because I have plenty to share. On Friday there will be a short quiz on angles and the terms we learned last week.

Welcome back math families! We are all finished with decimals (although in math you're never really finished with anything) and we're moving into our geometry unit. We'll begin with points, lines, rays and angles. I love the geometry because it's a nice change after the first quarter. I am going to be assigning seats this quarter to see if we can't get better participation from everyone. Really the class is  doing so well, but I want to see if it helps those who were in the back to be a little closer. Anyway, looking forward to seeing everyone again!

Last week of the quarter! We had the day off of course today because of our field trip. Tomorrow we're back at dividing with decimals. We'll be moving onto word problems that involve division and then we'll review some, too. We'll probably play a couple of games to make it fun. It's been a nice quarter with these kiddos. Hope they are enjoying it as well.

This week in math we will be doing word problems involving multiplication of decimals. After that we'll be ready for dividing with decimals. Greetings math families! Sorry I've forgotten to update this recently. We are now working through Unit 7, using all operations in solving problems with decimals. We will spend the remainder of the week working with word problems, reviewing model drawing and expectations for these problems. These kids have a solid foundation based on what I observed this morning. Next week we will begin multiplication, followed by division with decimals. Should be a fun week!

Good morning! I almost forgot to write a blog for this week. I hope you and your families enjoyed the long weekend! We got out of the heat and went camping. Lots of fun, but lots of work as well.

This week we'll be wrapping up our first decimals unit in math. The study guide is due tomorrow and the quiz will be on Thursday or Friday depending on how well the students understand the last two lessons. The next unit is also decimals, but it involves calculations through all the operations. Have a great week!

Wow! What an amazing lightning storm before the rain began. I hope you were able to see it with your kids! As I look ahead to the math plans for this week, I realize that we need to have a little quiz before beginning thousandths and rounding. So we'll do a quick quiz on Tuesday, before moving on to the final lessons of this initial unit. The students have had ample practice with tenths and hundredths and should do fine. I will also send out a study guide on Monday, which will be due on Friday.  There will be some problems that we haven't covered, but they can begin working on it to review for the unit test which will be the following week. That's it for now. It was nice to meet several of you on Wednesday night; we've got a great group of kids in here for math!

Good morning, math families! I apologize for not getting this up and running sooner. It's not my quarter for writing the fourth grade blog so this one just slipped my mind. In any case, better late than never! We have a great group of kids this year in my section. It's a small group because we lost a few to other schools. So we are a mighty 15 strong, which makes it nice and easy to teach. We have begun using our books this week and the first unit is decimals. After being introduced to decimal place values up to thousandths we'll begin working through the operations using decimals. I look forward to meeting you on Wednesday night to introduce myself and to discuss my classroom policies. Enjoy your weekend!
